Round 5: Online Learning during Lock Down

Even Though CoronaVirus has stopped us from going to school, but we still can learn and improve our knowledge through online learning. English literacy is still one of the subjects that we still need to improve. For this round 5 during the lockdown, we had to improve our English literacy skills such as reading and writing. We had 8 weeks and 8 different themes for each week. One of the themes that I like the most was “art”. Art was a theme for week 7. After I have done this theme for week 7 I can know how important art is to everyone and so on I can reflect on my own relationship with art, how art has helped me to release stress. I also can explore more about art in different museums on the internet all around the world to see different art pieces so I can recreate them by using my creativity and household items whenever I felt bored during this lockdown. Moreover, for this theme, I got to learn more things about art, especially one of the types of art called surrealism. In addition, after I learned about it, I also got to write a short story by using it too. In conclusion, even if we can’t go to school, online learning is still engaging between students and teachers and we still can gain knowledge and improve our skills through different subjects that we learned.

Marine Species Website Exploration

Nowadays, many marine species are being threatened in Cambodia and all around the world only because of humans. A Lot of marine species are likely to go extinct if people still continue what they are doing to harm all of those species. If all of those species will go extinct, the next generation will never see what they look like and how beautiful they were.  That’s why we have this exploration to share Cambodia’s marine environments with Cambodians and global citizens by raising awareness of marine species, promoting scientific discovery, protecting ecosystem services, and inspiring curiosity about the ocean. By this, we will create a website about marine life (group by morphology ) and ecosystems in Cambodia including all of the information. For the first round we focused on the outline of our website and on the next round we will try to make it out. Also, our website will be both Khmer and English so Cambodians and global citizens will be able to learn more about all of those marine species and ecosystems in Cambodia.

Launching Technovation App (Naeng Norng)

Every year, Technovation invites teams of young girls from all over the world to learn and apply the skills needed to solve real-world problems through technology. They believe that technology can change the world. Equips young women from ages 10-18 to become tech entrepreneurs and leaders. With the support of volunteer mentors, girls work in teams to code mobile apps that address real-world problems.

A group of 5 young girls called Litter Tree from our Liger’s students that had joined this technovation. They had created an app called Naeng Norng. Naeng-Norng is a platform that will reignite the Kingdom’s love for Khmer poetry! Through the word-search function, readers to find connective words with similar phrasing. The in-app lessons will also teach users more about composing poems and literature! To complete the app, this lead to an exploration called Launching Technovation App. Me and some of my friends are joining this exploration. In this exploration, we divided into different tasks such as researching poems, usability, and coding.

Overall, I think this was one of my great experiences because we can learn how to code an app.  And also I can improve my researching skills and know more about the information of different poems in Cambodia.

“History of Life on Earth”

Have you ever wondered about when the earth was formed or how old is the earth right now? Well, I don’t even know about this too. But after this round of STEM class which is the last round of 2019, I have learned about these things called “History of Life on Earth”. Earth has formed about 4.6 billion years ago but first life just started to appear on Earth about 4 billion years ago. The first life forms were microscopic and single-celled organisms. From this simple start, we can see the diversity of life today. The tool that helps us to understand the history of Earth and its life is the geologic time scale. It divides Earth’s history into Supereon, Eons, Eras, and Periods just like in the picture below. These divisions are based on major changes in geology, climate, and the evolution of life

Geologic Time Scale

Geologic time scale

Precambrian – 4.6 billion Ago

(The Precambrian was originally defined as the era that predated the emergence of life in the Cambrian Period. It is now known, however, that life on Earth began by the early Archean and that fossilized organisms became more and more abundant throughout Precambrian time.)

  • Hadean – 4.6 billion Ago – When the earth starts to form, when earth still hit by an asteroid, overall earth on this eon is a hot rock. In the Hadean Eon, the heat is 3 times as high as it is today which is temperature is too high to sustain life.
    • Archean – 3.8 billion Ago – When Earth’s climate becomes more stable and cool down enough to create continents, This eon start, oxygen is starting to form, when oxygen mixed with iron in the oceans and rusted collect on the seafloor.
    •  Proterozoic – 2.5 billion Ago – In Proterozoic, Earth is completely frozen. During this eon, life began to evolve into more complex organisms. Proterozoic is an eon when cyanobacteria produced oxygen, iron and methane were oxidized, and life emerged in the late period on the bottom of the sea. Several very server ice ages occurred in Proterozoic.
  • Phanerozoic – 544 million Ago (The Phanerozoic Eon is a period during which abundant animal and plant life have existed.)
    • Paleozoic – 544 million Ago (This eon is the best known as the explosion of life on earth, this Era is after the Proterozoic when life began and this era is where life start to grow more and more)
      • Cambrian 544 million Ago
        • The Cambrian Period was the largest diversification of life in Earth’s history. A new life started in the ocean then moved to land. Life got more diverse in the oceans in the age of fish. Eventually, life evolved on land in the age of amphibians.
      • Ordovician 505 million Ago
        • The Ordovician Period was when a rich variety of marine life flourished in the vast seas and the first primitive plants began to appear on land. Most of the world’s landmasses came together to create the supercontinent of Gondwana, which included the continents of Africa, South America, Antarctica, and Australia.
      • Silurian 440 million Ago
        • Silurian Period is when animals and plants finally emerge on land. The growth of corals and other marine organisms was stoked by oceans teeming with tiny planktonic creatures.
      • Devonian 410 million Ago
        • Devonian is a period that is known as the Age of Fishes and also a period that forests and the coiled shell-bearing marine organisms known as ammonites fossils first appeared.  There are several animals that live in this period including wingless insects and the earliest arachnids.
      • Carboniferous 360 million Ago
        • The Carboniferous Period is also known as the Age of Amphibians. And the climate of the Carboniferous Period was quite uniform (there were no distinct seasons) and it was more humid and tropical than our present-day climate. In this period, there are a lot of and animals included primitive amphibians, reptiles (which first appeared in the Upper Carboniferous), spiders, millipedes, land snails, scorpions, enormous dragonflies, and more than 800 kinds of cockroaches.
      • Permian 290 million Ago
        • The Permian period, which is the last period of the Phanerozoic, which ended in the largest mass extinction the Earth has ever known, began about 299 million years ago. The emerging supercontinent of Pangaea presented severe extremes of climate and environment due to its vast size.
    • Mesozoic – 245 million Ago (The Mesozoic Era is the age of the dinosaurs and lasted almost 180 million years from approximately 250 to 65 million years ago. This era includes 3 well known periods called the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. A mass-extinction marked the beginning and end of the Mesozoic Era.)
      • Triassic 245 million Ago
        • Triassic is about violent volcanic eruptions, climate change, or perhaps a fatal run-in with a comet or asteroid.
      • Jurassic 200 million Ago
        • Jurassic is about DINOSAURS, BIRDS, AND rodents. Crumbling landmasses and inland seas. Sea monsters, sharks, and blood-red plankton. Forests of ferns, cycads, and conifers. Warm, moist, tropical breezes.
      • Cretaceous 145 million Ago
        • The Cretaceous picked up where the Jurassic left off: Gigantic sauropods led parades of dinosaurs through the forests, over the plains, and along the coasts; long-necked and toothy marine reptiles terrorized fish, ammonites, and mollusks in the seas; pterosaurs and hairy-feathered birds filled the skies. But as the continents spread, the ocean currents churned with ever more vigor. After a temperature spike in the mid-Cretaceous, the climate began to cool, and the tenor changed.
    • Cenozoic – 65 million from Present (The Cenozoic Era is also known as the Age of Mammals because of the extinction of many groups of giant mammals, allowing smaller species to thrive and diversify because their predators no longer existed. Due to the large span of time covered by the period, it is beneficial to discuss the animal population by the milestone of the era rather than in generalities.)
      • Tertiary 65 million
        • Tertiary was the period of mammals. By the beginning of the Tertiary, the supercontinent of Pangea had been fragmenting for more than 100 million years, and the geometry of the continents and oceans had assumed an essentially modern aspect with several notable exceptions.
      • Quaternary 1.8 million
        • The Quaternary Period has involved dramatic climate changes, which affected food resources and brought about the extinction of many species. The period also saw the rise of a new predator: man.

Math round 2

Things start getting harder harder. Before, I think math is one of the easiest subjects to learn. But since our fourth-year start, everything has changed and now I will say that math is not easy like before. But this is my second round of the year. Things started to get better. I have learned a lot about algebra. Since our second round started in October, I have learned a lot of new things about algebra. We have started to learn about System of Equations, Inequality (Systems & Graphs) and a little bit of Functions. I think System of Equations is really hard to learn and understand but after I have learned and know the structure of it, it seems easy. Inequality (Systems & Graphs) was one of the lessons that I have proven a lot about it too. But for the last lesson which is Functions, I start to get really stressed with it. When I first learn the intro of Functions, I think that Functions are so easy. But when I learned deeper and deeper, this started to change. For me, Functions is one of the lessons that hard to learn too. I’m one of the people that not usually talk in a whole class, so this might be the thing that I want to improve on. But if we talk about some positive study about me, whenever I don’t understand something, I always ask someone to help me like a teacher or my friends. And also, I’m one of the person that always want to finished Khan assignment before the weekend or never do Khan assignment on Friday night because my teacher told me not to do it and also I really think that it’s a good idea too because we don’t really get stressed about it too much just relax. My third round had started and their a few goals that I want to learn and improve for this third round. I want to improve myself to be an active person in the class and also try my best to do it before asking someone for help. Talking about math, I also want to learn more about algebra in the next lessons.

Exploring Mental Illness

Every round in our English Literacy class, we always have a different theme to learn. But for this round, we have a theme to learn called “Exploring Mental Illness”. When I first heard it, it sounds interesting to me to learn about mental illness. This round, teacher had divided into two different unite one is about “Exploring and Understanding Mental Illness and Health” and another one is about “Examining Mental Illness in Literary Works and Film”. In the first two weeks, we learned about what is Mental Illness as well as what is Stigma. Continue two the next 4 or 5 weeks we continue two our second unit which is “Examining Mental Illness in Literary Works and Film”. In this time, we learn about the story that the authors were written related to Mental illness. There are three different authors which are Edgar Allan Poe, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Gabrielle Roy. During our 4 or 5 weeks, we have read a book from each author which are The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the last story is Alicia by Gabrielle Roy.

Khmer Rouge (Showing different perspective)

It is very awesome to learn about our own country’s history. Learning about our own country’s history can teach us more about what’s going on in each period and can teach us not to step on it again if it was a bad idea. This second round of the year, I got an exploration called Khmer Rouge which is the theme called Showing different perspectives. All of the Cambodian people know about this but they don’t want to talk about it. But why do they want to talk much more about it? Khmer Rouge is a dark period that people don’t want to go back again. But let me tell the story about it. Khmer Rouge is an organization following the idea of communist. 17th, April, 1975, is the day that the Khmer Rouge had captured Phnom Penh, which is the capital city of Cambodia. At first, the idea of this was good, but now it wasn’t. All of the people wear black clothes and Kroma. This organization had killed all the people with knowledge because they want to be equal to the poor people. A lot of people were killed or being tortured.

Anyway, by the end of this exploration, to show the people from different perspectives about the Khmer Rouge period, we have created many products such as Poem, Painting, fashion shows, and dance. Below are the poem and some pictures.

“This Country Conjures”

12th century,

Angkor Empire has risen

to be the largest pre-modern settlement

in the world.

It was built to represent

Angkor’s military, art, and economy,

as well as the power of the

“God-King.”

Everyone lived peacefully

with a beautiful and powerful country.

But now it’s the 20th century.

The Khmer Rouge has risen.

April 17, 1975 called

the Republic of Kampuchea.

Phnom Penh was captured,

and declared the

Kingdom of Cambodia.

A week later, over 2 million citizens

were pushed into the countryside.

Over 3 years, 8 months, and  20 days.

All the citizens lived under the control

of the Khmer Rouge

with No money, No education,

No religion, No clothing style.

At first

the idea of revolution was good…

But now it wasn’t.

Citizens with knowledge

were being

Tortured, Murdered,

Lonely, Pain,

Fear, With teardrop

Everyday.

A high school

turned into an S-21 prison.

A peaceful Chinese cemetery

turned into a killing field.

Like the 18 prisons and 300 killing fields

all around the country.

January 7, 1979.

The Khmer Rouge vanished

and the rules were over

by getting help from Vietnam.

Everything had turned back.

 People were not being tortured.

People went back to school,

did their jobs,

found money to support their family.

‘Even now, four decades on,

this small country still has the power to conjure.”

But people expect nothing more than they have…

People carry no ambition and no dreams.

All they want is to be left alone.

Right?

These memories always come up to people’s minds

They will never forget.

They don’t want to see it.

They don’t want to feel it.

They don’t want to touch it.

And they will never go back to it again.

Literacy Round 1

Case Study: Why do People flee home?

The first round of Literacy class, students were learning based on the case study: Why do people flee home? We use resources such as websites and books to further perceive the topic . We read a book called Inside out and back again, written by Thanhha Lai. When finished reading, students have a much more in-depth understanding about this very universal problem. At the end of the round, each student was required to write a poem about a made up character, and how he/she felt being a refugee and while fleeing home. Below is my poem. And it’s about a guy who flee home because of civil war happen in his country.

I believe!

My name is Marko.

I am not Christian, but Muslim.

I grow up in Bosnia

living with my parents.

My house was so beautiful

with one dike flow nearby.

I always fall asleep

with the sound of the water

That flow

From the dikes.

After seven years, my parents had died

Because of an accident.

Everything had turned inside out.

I need to live by myself

In order to survive.

I need to do everything.

It’s really hard for me

Because I’m just 7 years old.

But I had to accept it.

But here, I’m 20 years old right now,

Everythings had turned back,

I BELIEVE!

I live peacefully in Bosnia,

In the same house as usual.

I still always fall asleep

With the sound of water

That flow from the dikes.

After two decades,

I thought I will live peacefully forever.

But now it wasn’t,

WAR had turned my life

Back Inside out again.

Not just me,

Everyone were worried,

They don’t want that

to happen in their country.

Civil war had begun

In my country.

All of the troops had declared.

Before,

The sound of the water

that flow from the dikes

Used to make me fall asleep.

But now,

Everynight,

I never fall asleep,

The sound of gun mixed with bomb

Making me feel more than

Spooky.

Sooner,

The war had come

More closer to my home.

I need to escape

so then I won’t get killed.

So I decide to move to France.

Now here I am,

Paris, France

I can do everything just to come here.

It’s safer than my country.

Paris welcome me so warm.

They don’t discriminate me,

Even Though I am a

Refugee.

I came out of the darkness

and saw the lights here in Paris, France.

My life had turned Inside Out, but now Back Again
